Perfect Harmony
Moored at Huntingdon

13th June '13

Last night it was so miserable that John lit a fire and we were cosy as can be! Checked my diary and it IS June, ho hum.

Today we were up even brighter (a lie) and earlier (the truth) than the last couple of days but the river police did not come knocking at the door at 8.00. One boat arrived at about 10.15 last night but moored at the far end of the turning so  we never saw them.

We were away by 8.30 and were too early for the lock-keeper at the end of the Kennet so came onto the Thames on our own.

Back on the Thames - not so pretty when it's grey but I actually enjoyed getting onto the wide water - oh boy has this trip opened my eyes! Who says an old dog can't learn new tricks?

A clue as to where we were....Henley if you can't make out the name. Mind you this is still a mile or so to the west, well out of things.

We saw several 'moorings' but none I fancied and anyway we wanted to do some investigating, so we are moored at Henley and paying £9.00 for the privilege. Mick said that it was the only place on the Thames that they'd had to pay and someone came and knocked on the roof of the boat at 10.30pm to get the money, so we've done the decent thing and bought our ticket from the machine in the car park.

There's been a lot of ooohing and aaahing going on at the properties around us, but this one stood out. John hasn't checked his lottery ticket this week so........

In Henley the preparations for the Regatta are well under way. Apparently it's at the end of June/ beginning of July and already we have seen men clearing the lawn edges on the park along the water and washing all the lifebelts, and the boats don't even come along this bit where we are. The mooring goes up to £30 for the night the week before and £40 for the weekend, so glad we're not planning on being around for it.

Surprisingly we only found one pub with a river frontage and so we had lunch there- and very nice it was too. Then we bought Paddy back to the boat and went to the Rowing Museum, which John found more interesting than I did, but it was very well organised and there was a Wind in the Willows exhibition. Since this is my favourite book of all time, I was as excited as the youngsters who were going around and found that I had a complete recall of every chapter - John was very happy about this!!!!!

We had a cream tea to celebrate the fact that I've lost a further 4lb, and although this sounds a bit counter productive, all is OK, and completely in order.

No idea where we'll end up tomorrow, but we have a weeks licence and we are only going to the top of the Wey in that time so we should have time to loiter somewhat, even though the batteries and our power situation are suffering somewhat. Roll on London and just hope I can find a marina to book into for a week.
