8th May '13

Back to normal - just posted yesterdays and about to do today's. Slightly earlier than usual as we have had a short day.

The meal last night was lovely - Tuesday night is pie night so we both had one (£6 each) and they were lovely. I've also developed a taste for Pimms and they did a good one of those as well. Roy and Daphne joined us after we'd eaten and we had one of the latest nights out in ages, chatting in the pub. They are having problems with the connection between the swan's neck and the rudder so want to get on to Devises to hopefully find a boatyard to sort it out. This is not the place where you want to lose control of the boat - not on the way back with the current of the Kennet to deal with. We don't want to get to Devises until tomorrow where John will do an oil change, so we are going to start off together tomorrow (as long as we're up in time) and do the lock (last one for miles until the Caen flight) and then we will stop en route, possibly catching them in Devises to see how they're doing.

We did get up in time (tomorrow we shall lie in for England) and have travelled a few miles along what is known as the Long Pound in between the sets of locks. I think it's about 11 miles but you need that before the 29 locks that all have to be done in one day! (Thank you Graham and Valerie for offering to help).

We have moored at Honeystreet today after only a few hours since we saw some moorings by the Barge Inn, The moorings shown in Pearsons at Pewsey were awful and we were glad we didn't travel on to them yesterday, which we'd sort of thought about. Why they are called moorings beats me. Anyway these are nice with rings and so here we are. Our view is to the north is to the White Horse at Alton Barnes and to the south is Salisbury Plain.

Wouldn't have wanted to be in the vicinity when this came down!

Another example (like Tixall Wide) where the local gentry had to be appeased before allowing the canal to pass through their lands. This rather attractive bridge and beyond it a wide stretch of canal (too shallow to navigate outside the normal width) that looked like a lake from the parkland. Well why not?

A Hercules flying overhead, We've seen a few of these in the last couple of days, and against all odds I managed to snap it!

You really do see all sorts on the canal - there was a food bowl in front of the door of the kennel???

The white horse opposite us.

A nice quiet day ahead now and another one tomorrow as we only have to go a few miles to Devises. The weather has changed today - lots of rain overnight and some drizzle this morning but it seems to be brighter now. We'd got used to the soaring temperatures, and rather liked them.
